Radio Dead Air

About #@#$&!@) time!

April 17th, 2010

Took Moffat long enough. This week’s episode was a marked improvement, both in Smith’s performance and in terms of the storytelling.

But I can’t say a fucking word about it because every damn second of the episode is a spoiler. Suffice to say it was a really good one. The Doctor was a bit more relatable and Smith is finding his feet. Gillan’s role was a little scaled back this week, but the moments she did have were definitely shining. So yeah, good show.

It does lead me to a rant, however . . . why does the BBC do this “trailing episodes” shit? It’s 2010. You can show episodes the same day, both in London and New York. There’s nothing stopping them from airing them on BBC America in the same time frame as across the pond. When the revived series had just come out, I could understand; there was no guarentee the show would be a hit, or even catch on over here. But has time progressed, it became obvious that the show would be a moneymaker. So why this idiotic holding back of episodes? It just means there’s now two weeks between Doctor Who fans and the new episode. The fans either have to avoid all things Doctor Who related on the internet so as to avoid spoilers, or just give in and download the episode or watch it when it gets posted to YouTube. You know how much money the BBC makes off of that?

A big fuck all.

It’s stupid and I can’t see any sensible explanation for it. It’s like when Battlestar Galactica was airing in the UK, and the US forced them to lag episodes as well. I’m sure the networks over there lost money because fans just torrented the damn things.

I’ll make you a promise, BBC: air the show the same night here as you do in England, and I’ll watch the fucking thing on BBC America like everyone else. You’ll get your lovely commercial dollars. Won’t that be nice?
